Wired Communications is collaborating with Shiel Sexton to deliver a robust data cabling and networking solution for The Farm, a 400-unit apartment complex across three buildings, including amenities areas. The project involves comprehensive cabling, network infrastructure installation, and integration of AV and security systems, with completion expected in May 2025.

Key project highlights include:

• Installation of Cat 6 cabling for TV locations in each unit and amenities areas.

• Buildouts for 14 MDFs and IDFs.

• Deployment of wireless access points, switches, and firewalls.

• Integration of camera and AV systems in partnership with a specialist provider.

• Fiber installation from the MDF headend to all units, including splicing for seamless connectivity.

The Challenges

1. Large Scale and Complexity: Managing infrastructure for 400 apartment units, amenities areas, and office spaces required careful coordination across three buildings.

2. Comprehensive Fiber Installation: Installing 48-strand fiber from the MDF headend to IDFs, and single-strand fiber feeds to 400 units, posed logistical and technical challenges.

3. System Integration: Coordinating with a partner to seamlessly integrate the camera and AV systems with the new network infrastructure.

• Cat 6 Cabling Expertise: Installed and tested Cat 6 runs for TV locations in each unit, amenities, and office areas, ensuring optimal connectivity and reliability.

• Robust Closet Buildouts: Completed 14 MDF/IDF buildouts, creating the backbone of the apartment complex’s network.

• Fiber Installation and Splicing:

  • Installed 48-strand fiber from the MDF headend to each IDF.
